The health care industry is a demanding, but excellent field to be in. Health care professionals are always in demand, so it’s unlikely that anyone will have trouble maintaining a job. Within the medical field, there are hundreds of specialization options. The problem between choosing from such a large selection is deciding which field is right for you. If an X-ray technician is on your list of possible careers to pursue, take the following questions into consideration first:
Do you care about people?
This career requires interaction with diverse patients, empathy, and lots of physical contact. If you are unable to handle dealing with the different personalities you will encounter, this may not be the field you want to consider. You must be able to be professional and respectful no matter what is thrown your way. Empathy is also crucial for those pursuing a medical career. Patients are able to tell if you truly empathize with them or not. If it shows that you don’t empathize, they will feel more uncomfortable and nervous. They may not even admit all of their symptoms, which could make your job more difficult. If you don’t genuinely care about your patients, it will show, so you may want to consider another field if you don’t.
What’s your motivation?
If your only motivation is money, please find another career that is for you. If you have glamorous fantasies about being an X-ray technician, realize that your fantasies are not reality and it may not be suitable for you. Wanting to make good money and enjoy your job are good reasons to pursue the field. But, the problem is will you really enjoy being an X-ray technician or not? It is a highly demanding job and if you aren’t interested in the course material, it is not for you.
Are you willing to commit to hard work?
Even if you are empathetic and highly motivated for the right reasons, are you capable of committing to challenging work? Some of the course material you will have to learn is anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, radiology, radiation theory and protection methods, patient care, principles and concepts of imaging. Even harder courses you will have to master are magnetic resonance imaging, mammography, echo cardiology, vascular technology, and computed tomography. Most importantly, are you interested in the courses mentioned? If these subjects have little to no appeal to you, an X-ray technician is probably not the career for you. You don’t have to be interested in every single course, because no matter which field a person chooses certain things aren’t as fun for them. However, you must be interested in most of the courses you must take. Otherwise, you will end up despising your job in the future and that distaste will show, lowering the quality of your work. Wouldn’t you rather make great money in a field you truly enjoy, so you don’t have to force yourself out of bed each day? X-ray technicians make great money, but there are other fields that pay well too. This is a field a person must really enjoy and be dedicated to.
Even if the courses interest you, are you a committed and dedicated person? Are you willing to put a lot of time and effort into this career? Education and training is only the beginning, though. You may have to work long, odd hours, go through periods of high stress, and lots of hard work. Will you be able to balance this with other important aspects of your life?
Do you have the necessary strengths and skills to be in the medical field?
As with most fields, there are certain personality traits and skills that are important for this career. Do you have great interpersonal and communication skills? Do you have a strong work ethic? In addition, you should have an inclination for technical and mathematical material. You should also require responsibility, maturity, and commitment to quality.
Are you comfortable with health care?
This means are you comfortable in the work environment? Can you handle squeamish scenes, outbreaks, and all sorts of different people? Not all of your patients will be easy to deal with. And there are scenes that can make a person with a weak stomach squeamish or ill. Are you able to think on your feet? All of this should be taken into consideration before you make your decision.
After you’ve taken everything into consideration that was mentioned, you will know if an X-ray technician is your calling or not. Don’t be discouraged if it isn’t, there are many more possibilities for you to explore that will require your unique strengths and capabilities. However, if this specific field fits your qualities, skills, and personality traits, being an X-ray technician will be a satisfying, well paying, stable career choice.
