Ultrasound Technician Jobs: A Growing Market Only Gets Bigger

Just like the x-ray technician market, the ultrasound tech market is growing rapidly. The Baby Boomer generation is aging, and as a population ages the need for medical care increases. Tools used for diagnosis and to determine a course of treatment are increasingly important, and since so many of these tools require experts to use them correctly, the available jobs for technicians are going to increase in the next ten to fifteen years.

Ultrasound techs perform a number of important jobs, and they are needed in many medical fields. The most well known role is that of an obstetrics office ultrasound tech. Ultrasound machines are used to safely view a developing fetus inside a woman’s womb. As the baby grows, both the parents and the doctor will want to see and check up on the progress and health of the baby.

However, there are a wide variety of other roles that ultrasound techs play, including in the world of diagnosis. Just like x-ray technicians, the images that are produced by an ultrasound tech can be used to diagnose diseases and injuries. While x-ray techs take static photos of the inside of the body, ultrasound images are processed in real time like a video feed. Still images can be produced, as well, and when an ultrasound reveals an unusual growth the still images are often used to attempt to diagnose. Treatment is also somewhat determined by images taken of the inside of the body. Ultrasounds can be used to help with surgery, especially for a biopsy to determine what kind of growth is present.

Schooling is relatively short, and you can be on the job within about two years if you work hard and do well. The benefits of getting into a medical profession are many. Salaries are usually set to a pay scale that reflects the level of responsibility that you have. Medical professions are serious, and the amount of training necessary to do the job right can be overwhelming for some people. However, with determination and enthusiasm is it possible to be on your way to a new and exciting career fairly quickly.

There are many options to explore if you are considering a medical technician job, like an ultrasound or x-ray technician. Ongoing education and re-certification means you will always be learning and never get bored with the same old routine.
