Becoming a doctor is expensive. Even the tuition for nursing school is enough to make people incredibly wary. Will you ever pay off the debt of getting that great education? The hope is that once you are highly trained, you can expect a higher salary, and for the most part that is true. Of course the other challenge is time, and as you probably know it takes a lot of time as well as money to become a nurse or a doctor. More and more people are realizing that working in medicine doesn’t mean spending a fortune on an expensive education if you decide to study to become a medical technician.
Medical technicians can be x-ray techs, ultrasound techs, surgical technologists, or medical assistants. There is a wide variety of jobs that need to be done surrounding any doctors visit or surgery, and a team of techs is usually responsible for making sure things go smoothly. Medical assistants are responsible for scheduling, filing medical paperwork, and handling insurance claims. Surgical techs often monitor the life signs of the patient while a doctor is conducting the procedure. They can also be the person who hands instruments to the doctor, preps the surgery room, and cares for the patient.
Ultrasound and x-ray techs take images of the inside of a patient’s body. Ultrasound machines can take images in real time, like a live video feed. They are used to see the progress of growing babies that are in their mother’s womb as well as to detect unusual growths or abnormalities in all parts of the body. X-ray techs are responsible for ensuring that a clear and useful image is taken, which the doctor will then use to diagnose, treat, or recommend further procedures. X-ray technicians are responsible for ensuring that patients are comfortable and still during the imaging. They are also trained in the safety measures that are necessary for anyone who works with x-ray technology.
Any of these serious and important responsibilities can be handled by a certified and licensed technician who has been trained in their specialty. Medical technicians handle tasks that doctors could do also, but are usually too busy to handle. That way each patient has more time with their doctor. If you have always thought a medical career would be interesting, but never wanted to commit to the financial burden, perhaps a medical technician career will be perfect for you.
